“The Neighbours”

LKB71_TheNeighbours_WebSpeaking of pop culture references, you probably won’t find any of this funny if you don’t recognize the sitcom catchphrases spouted off by our heroes in panel 4. Even if you did, there’s still a chance that you didn’t find this funny at all, but there’s nothing I can do about that.

ITEM! Today’s strip marks the one year anniversary of Laura Knows Best! Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who has supported this blog one way or the other. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, your support goes a long way in keeping me motivated to produce the best I can week in and week out. I should also give a big thanks to Laura herself who lets me record our lives for posterity with only the occasional grumble.

One of the snazzy features available on WordPress is a map that breaks down the visitors to the site by country. I think that one of the amazing things about a webcomic is the ability to reach out to a global audience, something that’s much harder to do hawking the traditional paper and staple variety. So, after 71 comics, here’s a glimpse of where Laura Knows Best has been seen worldwide:

LKBWorldMapI figure after one more year, I’ll have taken over the world (although if anyone reading this knows someone in Greenland, I’d be in your debt)!

Another jazzy WordPress feature is the ability to see what search terms people used to find the site. These can often be quite random, and I often wonder if the people searching these topics were disappointed with what Google found for them. Here’s a rundown of some of my favourite:

5) Webcomics eyepatch

4) Chikungunya jokes

3) Biological clock ticking comic strip

2) Toughlove Laura

1) Marriage night in bed in America

That’s it for this week’s special anniversary edition! Have a wonderful New Year!

“The Night Before Christmas”

LKB70_TheNightBeforeChristmas_Web

As my mom so often reminds us, my sister and I would take turns each year throwing a fit and storming up to our room during the process of decorating our house. The one of us remaining behind would look up at our parents and remind them of who the good kid was in hopes of getting a better present. I don’t think it worked.

“The Christmas Special”

LKB69_TheChristmasSpecial_WebFor me, it just doesn’t quite seem like Christmas without a few crudely animated Christmas specials to usher in the season of peace, joy, and unrestrained consumerism. When I was younger, my mom would record shows on our VCR(!) and after a few years we had a half dozen tapes packed with Yuletide goodness that we would watch year after year.

While most people have their favourites, here’s a sampling of what I consider some of the best:

1. A Muppet Family Christmas

2. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

3. A Charlie Brown Christmas

4. How the Grinch Stole Christmas

5. ‘Tis the Season to be Smurfy

“The Babysitters” (Part 4 of 4)

LKB68_TheBabysitters(Part4)_WebNeedless to say, we haven’t babysat since. That said, little Cody was over today for the first time since his complete and utter breakdown, and he was quite happy. He even smiled at me, very tentatively, which was a huge breakthrough.
