I thought I’d take last week’s discussion on hipsters to the next level and let everyone in on the fun! A game like this would be easy to play in my neighbourhood – hopefully you can make it work in yours!
Jeez, I think on any given day if you passed me you could tick off “Beard or Mustache”, “Knitting” (picked it up over the holidays and do it in the classes I’m a TA to scare the kids off as the weird bearded TA that knits), “Plaid”, “Microbrew” if you count that I make my own wine and alcoholic ginger beer, and “Scarf” (one of the various ones knit for me by Linda for me). If Linda is along with me, you can tick of “Converse”, “thick rimmed glasses”, “vintage T-shirt”, “Buttons” (generally on her knit toque), and “knitting”…..oh god, are we a hipster couple, even if we aren’t trying to be hipster?
I would argue that yes, you are a full-fledged member of the hipster community. Is it ironic that you are and didn’t know it? Hopefully, ’cause that would help your cred.
Now that I know, it definitely diminishes any cred there might have been. Although my brother Luke tried to explain to me this summer that my mustache/sideburn combo was hipster as opposed to wannabe hipster since I didn’t do it to try to be hipster…. apparently mental context is important to hipster culture…. too complicated for me… Although contrary to Linda’s wishes, I am growing the sideburns/mustache combo again for next fall to make myself the last TA the students will go to for questions or help (i figure this is a more sanitary way to keep em away than to stop bathing)
OMG we’re everywhere and every age! I’m your mother’s high school friend, and I’m wearing skinny jeans, plaid, nerd glasses, and buttons (a skull and crossbones, and a monkey face).

Hipsterism does not discriminate against age, race or creed. It is the ultimate unifier.
