“The Birth Story”

NewLKB_6There’s nothing quite like a good birth story to bring women together. I guess reliving the trauma of labour again and again and again is in some way therapeutic.

Anyway, congrats to A.G. on the delivery of a bouncing baby girl! (Well, maybe not bouncing yet – those newborn necks are a bit floppy). All the best!

“The Recovery”

Laura has said on a number of occasions that she wished¬†more women talked about recovery after labour. It seems that everyone is so fixated on labour because of the intensity of the experience and the anticipation of the baby’s arrival, that they forget to tell you that you that there’s a whole world o’ pain and discomfort awaiting once that sucker’s out!

I suppose our friend and Laura Knows Best guest star A.G. will soon find out first hand in a matter of hours. She’s in labour as I write this, and I have a feeling why things have been so slow for her is due to the delay in getting this strip out. Sorry, A.G.!

Wow. A week has gone by already. Time has a funny way of slipping away when you’re in a waking coma, which is more or less how I’ve felt most of this week. I’d say I’m jealous of the hormones that seem to be giving Laura superhuman levels of energy, but she had to squeeze an 8 pound 3 ounce bundle of joy through her you know what. So she deserves to have them.

I hope you enjoyed last week’s real-time simulcast of the birth, but in case you missed it, check out the first part here. Events in real-life deviated ever so slightly – the car ride, for instance, was a lot less calm and there was little time to discuss nursery decor. In the end, though, Laura was a true champ – no meds needed, and she even had the resolve to hold the baby in while I ran back out to the car to find a parking spot where I wouldn’t be ticketed.

I thought I would take this opportunity to let long time readers know that I’m going to be taking a little time off the strip to deal with some other things that need to get done and to adjust to a new life and schedule with a newborn. Expect a return of some kind in the New Year.

In the meantime, let me introduce the newest member of our cast, Finley:

“The Birth” (Part 1)

IT BEGINS HERE! Boil some water! Get some blankets! Laura’s gonna have a baby!¬†Ladies and gentlemen, you are witnessing history in the making, as both cartoon Laura and flesh and blood Laura are going into labour at exactly the same time! Yes, you are reading that correctly – Laura is in labour. Now. Its a birthing simulcast in comics form, and you’re all invited!

No, that doesn’t mean I’m dragging my sketchbook into the delivery room, but it does mean that a new comic will be uploaded every few hours until the big reveal. Of course, I was really, really, really hoping that it would all begin like this. You know, fairly well rested and all that. But kids have a tendency to not listen to their parents, even when they’re in utero.

If you don’t want to miss a senses-shattering moment, make sure you’ve subscribed to the blog!

Now to go time some contractions…
